Goji Berry Goodness

Christmas may almost be upon us but here at rawgaia, we haven't been resting on our laurels when it comes to new products! Today, I am absolutely delighted to be able to tell you a little bit more about goji berries, the amazing natural superfood that is at the heart of our latest Organic Goji Goddess Superfood Skincare Ritual. This superfood skincare ritual is cold pressed, cold processed, certified organic to COSMOS organic standards with Soil Association certification, certified Vegan and certified Cruelty Free!

These shrivelled red berries may not look particularly impressive but they are jam packed with goodness which we've harnessed to create a skincare product that simply loves your skin.

Goji Berries come from the Chinese Lycium barbarum plant (1) and have been used for centuries in China as a traditional medicine. In fact, some legends have it that they were consumed by 'monks in the Himalayan Mountains thousands of years ago...to help aid meditation and obtain greater health, vitality, longevity, energy and stamina.' (2). However, it has only been recently that they have been adopted in the Western world as one of the original 'superfoods'. Although the NHS claims that studies conducted thus far have not been large enough, initial results from said studies and anecdotal evidence claims an impressive list of benefits from these inconspicuous berries including improved fertility, boosted immune system, protected eye health, as a potential weight loss aid and as promoting healthy skin (3)·

The secret to the benefits of goji berries when it comes to our skin is in the vast amount of antioxidants that they are full of. (3) Antioxidants work to protect your skin by fighting the free radicals which damage your skin cells. As well as these, goji berries are full of amino acids that help replenish your skin cells and fight the ageing process. (4) And if that wasn't enough, they also contain high levels of beta-carotene (5) which helps to promote healthy skin. The body converts beta-carotene into vitamin A, which is an essential nutrient that we need 'for healthy skin and mucus membranes, our immune system, and good eye health and vision.' (6)
