We often mention this amazing ingredient in passing but it is such an incredible substance that this week we thought it was time to investigate it more deeply.

That's right, if you haven't already guessed, we're talking about Raw Cacao Butter, an ingredient found in all our jars of moisturisers here at Rawgaia.

Raw Cacao Butter really is a magic ingredient and the perfect choice to help leave your skin feeling hydrated, silky smooth and soft, especially after exposure to the sun.

Cacao butter differs from it's more processed cousin, cocoa butter in that is formed by cold pressing cacao nibs, without any heat processing treatment.

This is important as it ensures the retention of more of the essential nutrients, vitamins and minerals that are so beneficial to our skin and helps to create the most potent product possible.

One of the amazing things about cacao butter is that it can be used as pre-emptive protection from the sun as it 'provides a barrier for the skin that will protect it from outside agents.

The antioxidants and beneficial organic molecules protect the skin from environmental, internal, and external forces that can cause irritation or damage to the skin'.(1)

This barrier is due to it's composition of fatty acids which is made up of 46.4% Oleic Acid (2), a substance that is particularly good at not only rehydrating your skin but then sealing in the moisture and creating the barrier we talked about.

It also provides a degree of SPF protection from the sun although shouldn't be relied on solely as your sun protection.

Cacao butter is absolutely jam packed with anti-oxidants, vitamins and essential fatty acids and alongside 7 different varieties of fatty acids, it's impressive list also includes Vitamin E and K (3), both well known for aiding skin cell repair and growth.

It also contains plant sterols (naturally occurring substances found in fruit and vegetables) and in particular, B-Sitosterol which 'has wound healing and skin repairing properties' (4).

This combination of vitamins and sterols has the enviable result of being a substance that is brilliant at healing any damage your skin might have suffered, especially from the sun.

Finally, in addition to protecting and healing your skin at cell level, cacao butter is also an amazing moisturiser.

This is because not only is it replenishing the moisture in your skin but as it is healing your skin from the inside out, it allows the cells to be able to rehydrate more effectively and then seals in the moisture.

Being a natural, unprocessed product, it is kind to all skin types and on top of this, smells simply divine!

So if you're looking for an effective natural moisturiser this summer that is kind to your skin as well as the environment, look no further! Cacao butter is the number one choice of skin-care lovers worldwide as simply the best moisturiser around.

In a nutshell, it 'allows the skin to radiate and replenish, creating a golden quality' (5).

Leave your skin feeling silky soft, smooth and smelling great and rest peacefully in the knowledge that you can enjoy your time in the sun this summer without damaging your skin.
